Best practice is one of those things that people are always looking for, I mean, if you are doing something why would you not want to follow best practice?
My feeling on it is that it’s a trap!
One of the great things about Scrum is that it is an iterative process that relies on timeboxed sprints. At the end of each iteration, we have a retrospective. During this retrospective, the team reflects on what could be better. This practice allows us to improve and refine the process.
My concern about best practice arises from agile’s focus on constant improvement and discovery. If you are already following ‘best practice’ then why would you need to improve? In fact, how can you improve? You are already doing what is best!
Perhaps then, the only authentic ‘best practice’ is to assume that there is always something that you can improve.
